Tamás Bubnó:
In our school we follow a syllabus based on Kodály’s principles and pedagogic
guidelines completed with a curriculum in church music. We have two lessons of
singing in the Budapest Singing School – hosted by the Deak-Diák Primary School
since 1996 – not because there would not be a need for more like them, but because
we want to set an example by stressing the fact that the singing school system can be
attained in any kind of school in whatever region of the country. Benjámin Rajeczky
stated clearly that the first golden age of Hungarian music was in the Middle Ages,
when singing schools (scholae cantorum) became widespread.
János Mezei:
As my colleague Tamás Bubnó has mentioned, the idea of a singing school, a schola
cantorum was not our invention, but looks back on a 1500-year-old tradition in
Europe and a 1000-year-old history in Hungary. Its essence is the close connection
between school and church. Regular liturgical service is also an essential part of the
curriculum. (…) Finally, a basic aspect of our concept is regular soloistic voice train-
ing which cannot be evaded either by voices or in choirs.
