Everyday experience shows clearly that teaching music in a comprehensive way pay-
ing attention to the entire personality makes pupils more intelligent, better, more
confident, more cheerful and more sociable.
On the grounds of this experience we have introduced at the Tom Mutters School,
where I am the headmaster, one or two music lessons daily instead of the former
number of one lesson per week, frequently cancelled anyway. This means that we
have 5-10 music lessons weekly. Naturally, the number of lessons in other subjects
has been reduced by this. However, to our surprise, the performance of pupils in
these neglected subjects has not diminished (as it might have been expected), but
has stagnated or even become better. This experience is hardly credible and under-
standable!
