Kodály’s prediction and the influence of his conception on art education are proved
not only by the practice of the past decades, but also by studies in the natural
and so cial sciences. But to meet the challenges requires background institutions and
scientific research, like any other study. I sincerely wish that the informa tion
and practical programmes of this conference stimulate current art education to re-
gain the rank and authority it had in Kodály’s time.
Let me emphasize this again with Kodály’s words: ’Culture cannot be inherited. The
culture of our forebears quickly vanishes unless each generation strives to attain it again
and again. We can only achieve the things which we have worked, or possibly suffered for.’
